The Sentinel

My Grandson has a love of history, particularly the Viking and Anglo Saxon period, so I wrote this especially for him, with no intention of publishing it.

It tells the story of Freya and her family, their past struggles with poverty, following the death of Freya's husband when her children were very young. A cycle Freya never thought she could break free from until she wins the lottery.  She struggles to believe her good fortune is true, she dare not believe it, for if it turns out to be a hoax, it would be a cruel blow, more soul destroying than not winning it at all.

Her mind in turmoil, Freya, dismisses the letter, and in a brain fugue she sets off on a journey with no destination in mind, eventually, after hours of travelling, she finds herself pulled in at the side of a road, standing entranced before an ancient tree, The Sentinel. A practical, down to earth woman (she has had to be) Freya has never been a tree hugger but finds herself captivated.

David Reed is an Estate Agent who mistakes Freya for the client that has kept him waiting for more than half an hour. Disabused of his error but unperturbed, David decides he has been stood up and offers to show Freya around Sentinel Cottage, standing on the opposite side of the road. Is it chance or fate that has brought Freya to this place at this time? As David shows her round the rundown cottage, she learns of the history of The Sentinel and the surrounding land. At more than 1500 years old The Sentinel was once the centre of  a Viking settlement and the whole area is in danger of Developers. When David reveals the vendor is in a nursing home with his only son killed in Afghanistan and is offering the cottage (practically giving it away) at such a low price because he wants someone who will care for the land and history, rather than see it all go under a bulldozer for new development. Freya brokers a deal that will change her life forever as the past and present come together to save The Sentinel
