Day One: 9th April 1483
The dying King, Edward IV, lay surrounded by his courtiers. Close to hand his greatest friend, William, Lord Hastings, the Queens's son by her first marriage, Thomas Grey, Marquis of Dorset her two brothers, Edward Woodville and Lionel Woodville with various priests and lawyers. They need his final will. They need to secure their power. But in his dying moments, Edward's thoughts are not concerned with satisfying their greed and power play. He is thinking of securing the realm for his heir, the 12 year old Edward, Prince of Wales and ensuring the boy will have a trusted and honest adviser to guide him and the realm until the boy comes of age. Scribes write down his last wishes feverishly, as Edward names the one person not there, the one person who has been left deliberately in ignorance of Edward's illness, his brother, Richard Duke of Gloucester as Lord Protector of the Realm.
Amidst the shocked gasps and protests, Edward calls for order. He knows he is leaving behind factions who hate each other,He calls Hastings and Dorset and begs them to clasp hands and to put aside their differences, begging them to swear to love each other. They do so, as Edward breathes his last, an enigmatic smile on his bloated face, the secret he has harboured since 1462 taken with him, or so he thought.
